Why a full skin check matters
Skin cancer doesn’t always show up where you’d expect. Common types like melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma can appear on skin that looks completely normal, which is why checking your whole body matters more than tracking a few spots.
That’s why every skin check at Skinscape 360 starts by photographing your entire visible skin surface, not just individual moles. A specialist then reviews the images and examines anything that needs a closer look.

What do I need to know about a skin cancer check?
Our preparation, procedure and FAQ’s for skin cancer checks are listed below. We’re based in Auckland but can discuss any of this with you over the phone if you require more information.
- No make up to be worn
- Remove jewelry where possible
- Wear brief underwear or a bikini (No boxer shorts if possible), neutral colours only
- Long hair to be tied in bun, please bring a hair tie
- Men with a lot of body hair – recommend clipping it to allow the scanner cameras to see through to underlying skin.
- The imaging procedure will be explained & you will be asked to sign a consent form
- You will be asked to remove your outer clothing including jewellery and glasses
- The photographer will place you in the correct position in front of the cameras and take the image of you in your underwear
- There will be a number of bright flashes as the images are captured
- Once the photographer has checked the images the 3D avatar will be made
- You will then either:
- Proceed to a full body examination by Clare, our Chief Dermoscopist
- Have repeat imaging if not clear
- Be free to go if you have finished the capture and follow up will be
arranged with your referring Skin Specialist - Skinscape 360 uses advanced total body imaging to support the early
detection of skin cancers.
What happens during a total body photography scan with the Vectra WB 360?
You’ll have a full-body scan using our 3D imaging system, which takes high resolution photos of your entire visible skin surface in seconds. A specialist then reviews the images and takes a closer look at anything of concern using a handheld magnifying tool. Afterwards, you’ll be told clearly what happens next – whether that’s simply keeping an eye on things, further tests, or treatment.
